We love ice cream! And we love farm-fresh homemade ice cream! So while we were visiting Flamig Farm in Simsbury, we were told that if we wanted to have some ice cream after our petting zoo adventure than we HAD to visit Tulmeadow Farm’s Ice Cream stand!
Tulmeadow opens seasonally, usually mid-April and stays open seven days a week from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. They close for the season in October. Since it was just after Earth Day, we appeared to be catching them right after they opened for the season! Talk about good timing!
The Farm store is literally right around the corner from Flamig Farm, located on Route 309.
Tulmeadow Farm’s Ice Cream has a full menu with various cones and cups, sundaes, shakes and shaved ice. They also sell hand-packed quarts and pints. They have a bunch of toppings too including sprinkles.
They offer a wide selection of hard ice cream that they make themselves right on site. In fact, they make over 50 different flavors of very rich (16% butterfat) gourmet ice cream. You’ll find that their flavor menu may change during the season and not all of those 50 flavors are on the board. But trust me, there are some good (and difficult) choices for you to make! The most popular flavor is their red raspberry chocolate.
I, of course, got the strongly recommended red raspberry chocolate chip. And it was good. My boy decided to try banana and my husband went with the vanilla malt. Both were also very good.
They have a few benches next to the ice cream windows. We score a seat but they were rather busy on this Sunday afternoon (and I can understand why)! The lines were long but they moved us along quickly and then we all crowded around the front enjoying our ice cream!
After our ice cream, we peaked inside the farm store. The store is open year-round, seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. They sell produce, plants, local foods including nuts, popcorn, frozen foods, honey and jam, maple syrup and more. There are also several freezer chests with Tulmeadow’s own hand-packed ice cream.
We are so glad the guy at Flamig Farm recommended Tulmeadow Farm’s Ice Cream to us! I had heard of this ice cream before but would not have realized it was literally down the street from Flamig that day. I’m so glad we didn’t miss out! This is one of those places where you just have to make the trip and try it yourself. Of course, if you really can’t make it, you can find their ice cream around the area including at two Whole Foods locations in Connecticut, Bushy Hill Orchard and Karabin Farms.
